We are going out to see Children's Health Partners tonight in Naperville to see if we would like them to be our pediatricians. I want a pediatrician that is a smaller practice no more then 5 doctors at the most. I would like the practice to be more green friendly/progressive with their approach with medicine. I do not know where I stand on the whole childhood immunizations issue but I was reading reviews about this practice and they are flexible about the subject. I want the practice to be very supportive over breastfeeding which it looks like they are. So we will see what the informational session brings and what they say about their methods. I can only assume that all the doctors have a standard of practice uniting them together.
Question time: Do you have any recommendations for a pediatrician that is in line with our guidelines?

Let me reintroduce myself
Lately, I have been thinking that maybe I should reintroduce myself for people who have gotten a chance to get to know me lately. I am not going to sit here and tell you about my likes and dislikes in terms of movies, cds and books since they are always changing. I am going to tell you how I have evolve over the last few years and how I would like to raise my child.
I am a feminist. I would like my child to be more gender-queer-equality then myself. I would like my child to go beyond what she is raise in and think beyond my limits that I currently have on myself. I would like my child to be a critical thinker and over think because questioning society and why people do things is a great trait to have. With this, I would like to NOT gender my child by the clothes she wears, toys she plays with, sports she into and etc. I was more of a tomboy and I would like that to happen. But would be completely okay, if she turns out to be a princess.
I am more eco-friendly. I would like my child to be super environmentally friendly and help change the world that they were born into. I would love for my child to be apart of the movement rather then standing back and letting it happen.
I am a liberal. I would like my child to see both sides of the liberal/conservative argument. There is no real side to be on but to understand where both sides are coming from and making a decision based on her own views on the subject matter. There is never a full issue that is black or white. I would like for her to see the world as a whole.
I think about the world's problems and issues. I would like my child to do something about global problems. I would like the books and music she listens to be from diverse cultures. I would not like my child to see everything from one point of view which can not have the fully story.
I have learn so much from my last two years at DePaul and the past two years from being out of school. I am a changing person that will always be questioning why people do the things they do. I will always want a more diverse environment for my child to be raised in and not for her stuff to define her as a person. I am always reminded when there is some huge environmental issue (flood in Fargo), what items would I be okay with losing and what items would I really want to save?
This is just a taste of the world I would like to bring my child into and I am always hoping that my friends and family would support this. I will appreciated any support in making this world possible by the ones who will love my child unconditionally.

Change old habits
I am very proud to say that I am changing old habits. I am going with cloth diapers for the baby so why don't I go with cloth menstrual pads for myself as well. So we are changing our habits and going green one step at a time.
Speaking of going green, I rediscover my love for etsy.com. I forgot how creative people get out there. I wish that if people would like to get me or the baby some different and creative, please check out etsy.com. I found cute slings, booties, burp cloths and clothes. There is something for everyone and you are helping out a local artist or a DIY SAHM. you never know who you are helping out but you are putting money back in to a local economy that is ten times healthier then putting it back into the big system. So please check them out for christmas, birthday and other random presents. Remember, we got your wedding gifts from sellers on etsy.com. Thanks.

Cloth Diapers
Last Sunday, we took a class about cloth diapers because we would like to save the environment and lower our cost with buying diapers. But cloth diapers are so much more then that. The baby will feel healthy around their bottom so not as many diaper rashes and so on. Also, the teacher told us to compare a human adult to wearing plastic underwear for 3 years and see how comfortable you will feel after that. Potty training should be easier because they will notice the wet and poopy diapers that they are sitting in and want to do something about it. Plus they will potty training up to 6 months earlier then the average. Plus, she just loved cloth diapering because it was easy and fun. So cute as well. Diapers today are not your momma's diapers.
We learn that going out and about should not change with diaper changes. We should do the diaper change as normal then throw the dirty diaper into our wet bag and take care of it when we get home. Also, same would go with our child being babysat by a friend or family member. They should take the wet cloth (water is fine), wipe the bottom then take the dirty diaper into the wet bag and put on a fresh one. We will go over the diaper routine with family members before they watch our little one. For diaper cream/diaper rash, there should be a protective barrier to the diaper and the bottom to make sure the cream does not touch the diaper. Also, if they wake up all red that we should let them run around for an hour to see if the redness clears up before the diaper change.
The really bad diaper rash might have been from anything and if our child gets that, then we are going to be using g diapers for the disposables. http://www.gdiapers.com/
The different types of diapers are: prefolds, fitted, contour, pocket diapers, and all in one. We are going to be using a mixture of all of them because the diapers are cute and fun. Prefolds are the same type that was used on us or 20-30 years ago. For example: http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/prefolds.htm Next is Fitted Diapers that would be hugging the child and you would not have to do any folding but just put the diaper on then the cover and go. http://swaddlebees.com/products/fitted_diapers and lastly there are contour diapers that I just do not know that much about due to not have an example in class to show us. But she recommended for newborns that prefolds and fitted diapers were the best. Also, with this diapers you would need a cover for them. It would just protect from leakage and other joys like that.
Next would be Pocket Diapers that have a little pocket inside of them to have the leakage contain the leakage. You can put almost anything in there if you need a temporary solution to the issue. But these diapers are great for overnights. You can put a doubler in the diaper so the diaper will last up to 12 hours instead of 3 to 4 hours with just a regular insert. For example: http://swaddlebees.com/products/pocket_diapers Lastly, there are all in one that are great because they look like a real diaper that even the most low tech cloth diaper user can use so people who are not using cloth diapers or just don't know anything about them. They have liners already in them and cannot be taken out. These diapers are popular with people who want to cloth diaper but do not want to do anything else with them. For example: http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=98&products_id=1279
To Prep the prefolds, they need to be washed 5 times and dried 5 times to get out any natural wax. This is for unbleached diapers and that would be the only ones that we would use. Or you can boil them for 20 minutes in a big pot. No detergent when prepping the diapers. PUL is a great fabric that most of the covers are made from and great for long car trips. Fleece would be the other fabric for covers that are great for overnights. Doubler are use for overnights because it makes the diaper last 12 hours and hemp is the better option for them.
How many diapers and What do you need for cloth diapering:
12 diapers for a newborn per day x 2 = 24 diapers for a newborn for 2 days worth (combo of prefolds and fitted)
3 covers for prefold/fitted per day x 2 = 6-9 covers for a newborn for 2 days
6 doublers for a 2 day period
6-8 diapers a day for 6 months and up
5-6 diapers a day for 2 years and up
We would need a diaper pail that locks shut, a liner with PUL fabric and a few wet bags for laying around the house and for the diaper bag.
4 sets of Snappies to hold the prefold closed. http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=100
a Diaper Sprayer for the toilet (Mini-Shower or Bumgenuis sell them)
Non-Residue Laundry Detergent for washing the diapers (Charlies's Alaen's)
50-100 cloth wipes and Spray Bottle (less then 6 months use water and after 6 months add a drop of baby wash with tree oil)
Diaper cream should have zinc based, organic and no fish oil.
For more questions just ask. The links were example by no means you have to purchase the items from them.
Here is a list of Links that would provide further information about cloth diapering.

Double Classes Yesterday
We had double child birth classes yesterday. We went to a cloth diaper class which I will give its own update and review about later today or tomorrow. We went to our weekly Childbirth prep class. Last night we mainly talked about partner support and watch "The Business of Being Born". I love this documentary because it really opens your eyes to how much the insurance companies and doctors really do not care about women. Now, I am not saying all doctors do not care about women but a good chuck of them do not. It is really sad that we do not have more midwives and they are not treated with proper respect. In my ideal world, we would have enough money to have a midwife/home birth. But so much of that would depend on cost. Since insurance companies do not really cover midwives or they fight with you about it, you would need so much of that money up front and hope that you will be reimburse later. Also, if we would not moving, we could have talked about it more freely but at last we are moving and I really do not want to deal with it right now. BUT IF (big if) we do have a second child and are living somewhere that we are not going to move and had the money and midwives were more legal then we would totally go that route.
Anyway, the moral of the story is check out this documentary because it is just awesome. Now my second point of the post would be partner support. The more I think about it, the more I would like to have a doula to be present at the birth. Being a rape advocate, I have come to realize that it is really nice to have someone who is not tie to you emotionally in the room with you. They are not going to flip out or be scare for you like someone who has emotion ties to you. Also, I would like to have Nick have some support so he does not feel like he needs to be everything to me and he can be able to check out if he needs to. Birthing and labor do not need to be a big circus. Between myself, Nick and the Doula, I would think that we would have our birth plan cover so everyone is on the same page and we will know who to ask for what and when. I think it will all be fine and in a orderly fashion for the most part. It would be like the wedding, I really had a loose plan going into it but everything worked out and nobody felt overly rushed. Or at least I did not feel overly rushed, bored maybe but not rushed. Bored would be pre ceremony in which I was left alone for a good majority of it. It was just me and the photographer and he was taking pictures of the things I asked him to. Hence, the labor will have my hubby and a doula so I am not alone.
Cloth diapers are coming next plus a 22 week picture. :)

Sling Class
Finally, we went to the Sling Class today. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. I have always seen people/mainly women wearing their children and I always thought it was a great idea for city living. I always figure that I would be living in the city by the time we had a child. More likely Portland but I guess we jump the gun a little bit. So last year when I was watching the two greatest kids alive, I came to the realization that babywearing may not be such a terrible idea after all in the city. I was moving through the city with a double stroller that could not get into any stores and had such a hard time on the CTA. Some time last year, I sign up for the Be Bye Baby e-mailing list and for $15 dollars, I could learn about how to sling my baby.
So worth the money. Now we register and got a pretty diverse stroller that I really will like and enjoy BUT it would only work with the car seat for under 6 months. We did register for the adapter as well. BUT there are so many benefits for wearing your child in those first 6 months anyway.
Benefits:
They cry less. Babies seem to forget about all their troubles and just relax more. Granted, before you put your baby on, you should make sure all their basic needs are meet so they are not fussy over the basics.
They learn more. They are more calm and able to take the world in better by being a relax state of mind opposite to endless interaction. This would be having the baby face the caregiver more then the outside world. They are also more likely to be interacting with the parent or the carrier rather then facing outwards towards the world and the caregiver cannot hear them. Also if there is any overload of stimuli they are going to be more likely to move in towards the caregiver then shut down in the stroller.
They are more organized. Since there is a thing called the 4 trimester, the baby will feel a sense of self better by being close to mom or dad. They will sense the familiar rhythms of mom's heartbeat and feel safer. It will be able to calm them down more and give them a sense of purpose. Also, they will humanized earlier because they are closer to mom or dad and be able to interact with the world. They will become more aware of the little things in life that make people, people.
Safety:
Always make sure that there are two fingers between you and their chin so you know that they are breathing because under 6 months they are not able to move their head to adjust for themselves. Always make sure the wrap is folded and not the baby itself. The baby's bottom should always be the heaviest part of the wrap and the legs should be more up wards. When they are really little, tucking in their feet and leg towards the body is better then horizontal laying. The face will always be unobstructed. Their back should always be supported in no matter what sling. Also, there are slings that have the child always facing out towards the world and their legs are not support. That will lead to hip and joint displacement which is not recommend for baby wearing.
Our Slings:
We had order a sling HugaMonkey which is a basic Pouch Sling. The baby will be in a cradle carry position. The baby has to be at least 6 and half pounds to be able to use and under 8 lbs there needs to be receiving blankets. The baby should be diagonal NOT horizontal. You have be size to get one of these slings and you really cannot interchange them with other baby wearing peeps. So Nick and I have our own pouch sling. We got them of Babysteals.com because it was the cheap steal that day. But you can find them at BuyBuyBaby, Target, Gap and other random places. The big brand for Pouch Slings is HotSlings. This brand is great because it comes in all different sizing.
We got a wrap today. It would be great for the summer because it covers the entire body. The baby would not have to wear that much clothes at all. This one can be interchange between all different people. Well, at least the MobyWrap which we got. It comes in various shades. This sling is common when looking at other cultures when seeing how babies are being carried by mothers. This one always had the most scary set up but I feel that it was much easier then it looked. Also, youtube has video on it and you can make one from the fabric store.
There is the Mei-Tai which we will wait to get until the baby is older then 3 months and can hold her own head. We really like that it could be a back carrier and a front carrier and had solid support on the straps. We are just going to wait to get it but def get it.
We did not like the ring sling. We felt that was way to complex for us and the metal rings would hurt. Plus after the baby start gaining weight, I think I would like wraps that are more evenly supported on my back oppose to my side due to not liking messenger bags that rest on my shoulder.

Dry Skin and Acne
So I am a big time suffer of the dry skin and the pregnancy acne. My skin needs to come off and start anew because it hurts so much sometime to cross my arms or bend over. I have gotten a really nice lotion that has been helping. L'occitane: Shea Butter Body Lotion. Which if the weather was not so freaking cold and dry out then the lotion would be enough BUT no, we have to be going through one of the worst winters ever when I am pregnant. So I got some other solutions to my dry skin. I went over to Lush to pick up some bath bombs and message bars. I got: (Bath Bombs) Butterball & Haagenbath (Bath Melts) Floating Island & (Message Bars), Therapy & Nutts. On friday after I got home from Lunafest, we tried the Therapy Message Bar and it worked wonders. I woke up the next morning and my back was not nearly cracking as much as it was when I woke up on Friday morning. So I am going to try one of the baths bombs tonight to see how it will make me feel.
Well, after I took a shower on Saturday morning, I discover all the acne that seem to pop up out of nowhere on my back. Now for a while, I have been realizing that I was getting random pimples on various places on my body. But I did not realize that my back was a playground of acne. Leave it to me, the person who never fully recover from teenage acne, will now have adult pregnancy acne as well. My only hope that after the baby that my acne will go away for good.
Update on the books we have gotten: Baby Bargains, Itsabelly's guide to going green with baby, The Baby's Owner Manual, The Toddler's Owner Manual (we got both of them for 8 buck all together, good deal), and The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood (again got it for 4 bucks).
We do have plans to go green with the baby so look to this blog for my reasons why we are moving beyond the big box stores and trying to raise our child to be as earth friendly as possible.
Well, after I took a shower on Saturday morning, I discover all the acne that seem to pop up out of nowhere on my back. Leave it to me, the person who never fully recover from teenage acne, will now have adult pregnancy acne as well. My only hope that after the baby that my acne will go away for good.
